GIOVANNI SEGANTINI
From 25 October 2025 to 22 February 2026 the Museo Civico of Bassano del Grappa is presenting a major exhibition that, more than ten years after the last one on the artist, celebrates the work of one of the leading exponents of Divisionism, one of the most sensitive observers of the natural world and incomparable singer of the mountain as a physical and symbolic place: Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899). Held with the support of the Segantini Museum of St Moritz and the Galleria Civica G. Segantini of Arco, and in association with Dario Cimorelli Editore, the exhibition retraces Segantini’s entire artistic parabola, for the first time placing his works in dialogue with those of the leading European artists of his time, from Millet to Van Gogh, to describe the career of a painting star able to contribute to and often influence the main art movements of his time.
Born into a family of humble origins in Arco, Segantini trained in the decorator Luigi Tettamanzi’s workshop and subsequently attended an evening course at the Accademia di Brera. From his debut in Milan, followed by his move first to Brianza and then the Rhaetian Alps, his work was determined by a close communion with nature and study of the expressive potential of light and colour. The painter took such research to its utmost outcomes with his move to Divisionism, and it then fully flourished in the symbolic and pantheist rewriting of the Alpine spaces, which he made absolute and eternal in painting terms.
From his “scapigliato” beginnings to his pastoral paintings, from his bold experiments as a colourist to his last, lyrical attempts to capture the spirit of the mountain and celebrate its myth, the exhibition will follow the most important junctures of his life and artistic career through a chronological and geographical presentation divided into four sections and marked by numerous thematic focuses.
By means of a hundred-odd works from important public and private European collections - from the Musée d’Orsay to the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam - some tracked down more than a century after their creation, the big Musei Civici of Bassano del Grappa exhibition will allow the public to discover, with completely new eyes, one of the most extraordinary artists of the Italian and European nineteenth century.
The exhibition design is by Mustafa Sabbagh. It creates a continuous dialogue between light and shadow, the space and the works of art, transforming the exhibition space into a dramatic stage where the vibrant colours of the works glimmer. It offers visitors a moving immersive experience, amplified by a visual crescendo with a single focus: the art of Segantini.
The exhibition is accompanied by an important scientific catalogue published by Dario Cimorelli Editore, available at the link, with essays by the most authoritative Segantini scholars and considerable space devoted to reconstructing his artistic pathway, his painting technique and the most recent diagnostic studies, along with annotated entries on the exhibited works.
The exhibition will be made even more accessible thanks to a free audio guide in Italian, English and German, produced in collaboration with Audiogiro, which will take the public on a journey of discovery through the life and art of Giovanni Segantini, narrated by Barbara Guidi, Director of the Musei Civici di Bassano del Grappa. To access the audio guide content, simply bring your smartphone and own headphones, scan the QR code located at the Civic Museum ticket office and exhibition entrance, or save the link.
The exhibition is curated by Niccolò D’Agati.
