POMPEO PIANEZZOLA
(1925-2012)
From 31 May to 7 September 2025 the Museo Civico of Bassano del Grappa is pleased to host a retrospective of one of the most important Veneto artists of the late twentieth century, Pompeo Pianezzola, on the centenary of his birth.

The Pompeo Pianezzola (1925-2012) exhibition is intended to anthologically reconstruct the career of this undisputed leader of ceramic art, who was also an all-round artist: graphic artist, designer and extraordinary exponent of the neo-avant-garde world.

Born and educated in the world of Nove ceramics, Pianezzola firstly attended the Scuola d’Arte per la Ceramica of Nove and then graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti of Venice. He later exhibited at the Venice Biennali and the Milan Triennale and was soon recognised on the international scene. Pianezzola was “discovered” by the most attentive and informed interpreters of modernity, from Gio Ponti to Licisco Magagnato, and subsequently highly esteemed by international museums, which hold excellent examples of his long, prolific and inexhaustible creative season.

«Every day is a new day for living, inventing, discovering, for resuming a conversation that will always remain open. On the page, my place
of meditation, I lay down my dreams, my words, my hopes»
Pompeo Pianezzola

The exhibition will unfold in eleven thematic sections with 120 works describing the artist’s entire creative parabola, from his youthful paintings to his first ceramics, his famous majolica shields, his multiplied works, artists’ books and tribute to Canova. The exhibition, enhanced by Asa Studio Albanese di Vicenza’s layout and accompanied by an exquisite catalogue published by Aniga Edizioni, with the support of Fondazione PIELLE24, documents all the stages that led a young talent from Nove to vie with the leading artists of his time, from Burri to Fontana, Melotti and Valentini, and to interpret the aspirations and tensions of Italian culture in the years of the economic miracle.

The exhibition is curated by Nico Stringa.
